
Psychologist, author, and professor-- Wilson Howland Guertin was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut in 1920. He married Helen Tierney in Little Falls, N.J. and continued to take college courses part-time. During World War II, he worked as a youth manufacturing B-29 bombers. Four years after their marriage the family moved to Iowa City so he could complete an M.A. in Psychology.
He holds degrees from Rutgers and from the University of Iowa. He was honoured to receive, his Ph.D. summa cum laude, the first doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology ever granted by Michigan State. He worked for many years as a clinical psychologist in Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Iowa. For seven of those years he was employed by the Veterans’ Administration. For one year he worked as a forensic psychologist for the Baltimore Court System. He served two years as Professor at the University of Baghdad in Iraq where he met and married Azza Showket.
He moved with his second family to Gainesville, Florida in 1960. During his first year at the University of Florida, he worked on a grant with an appointment in the College of Nursing. After that, he joined the Collegeof Education as Associate Professor in charge of developing their educational research studies.
Dr. Guertin was one of the first faculty members to devote himself to learning computer programming. He created a library of statistical programs for the social sciences. A few years later he received a one-year Senior Fulbright Lecturing Fellowship to teach at Ein Shams University in Cairo, Egypt. He retired from his Professorship at the University in 1985 but continued hisassociation as Professor Emeritus. He lectured part-time for another five years before retiring completely. He authored a textbook about statistical analysis, and published over 100 articles in professional journals.
When Dr. Guertin was 92-years-old, he started his new career. He began writing novels based upon his travels and lifetime experiences. Sustained effort has produced 14 novels, all of which are available from Kindle, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and other booksellers around the world. Most of the novels were released under the pseudonym, Jonathan P. Slow.
Dr. Guertin is a Muslim convert, who made the pilgrimage to Mecca. He managed to visit a hundred countries during his travels. His interests abroad lay in the Middle East and Latin America. He used to find time to visit his friends every year in Quito, Ecuador. His most recent trips were to Turkey, which he has gone more than 10 times.
A second marriage to a Lithuanian physician brought forth no issue. His three children from an early marriage reside outside Florida. Three of his children by his last marriage live in Gainesville and a fourth in Ft. Lauderdale. He has 14 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. At the age of 95 he celebrated 60 years of marriage to his third wife. During their marriage she found time to complete her studies for the Ph.D. in Education at the University of Florida. She is now retired from her teaching career in biology at Santa Fe College. Husband and wife are enjoying their retirement together in Gainesville.
